Class 1, Reading 2

Strand 4 is "participating productivity in science", the article states that this strand is often overlooked in the classroom, although research says that it is a critical part of learning science. This includes being able to do science in groups, discuss science... I often observe science out of a textbook or information coming from the instructor to the student. In order for students to become actively involved in learning science through strand 4, it needs to be practiced. Students aren't going to be wonderful scientists, unless we allow them to be. Conversations around science need to supported so that the conversations are effective. It is important that we teach our students to learn and teach one another, but we need to give the the tools and forum to do so.

  1. Jane,
You bring up a great point that students need to practice participating. I think as teachers we sometimes forget this. Without practice students won't be able to accomplish the goals we have set-forth for them. Taking science from the inquiry approach means that students should be able to work together and discuss what is happening and why.
As teachers we need to allow our students the time to think for themselves and to experiment on their own. This is what allows them to learn and have a positive learning experience.

  2. I agree with both of you and am so glad you pointed this out Christina. I feel like this is especially challenging for us right now, when our time for science is already so limited, it's hard to just let students explore on their own.
